Next Steps For the Deferred On Saturday we released decisions for Early Action (EA) applicants. There was a definitive resolution for those students who were admitted or denied in EA. Deferred students, however, will have to wait a little longer as we reconsider their cases in Regular Action (RA). Ive had a number of deferred students write in with questions so I wanted to post a quick entry that answered some of them publicly. What new stuff should I send? The only new thing you need to send in is the February Updates and Notes form. Youll use the FUN form to tell us your midyear grades and anything new that has happened or will happen. As always, you can send us stuff via email or mail, but the FUN form is the best way to update us. The FUN form is due by February 15th. You may  still submit a supplemental portfolio, but you do not need to; I would only consider this if you were planning to do so during EA but ran out of time. If you are retaking tests in December or January, you may also designate MIT as a score recipient and well add them to your application. You may not rewrite your essays, redo your interview, redo your entire applicationanything like that. We deferred you because we want to reconsider your application (the one you have already sent) in RA. What are my chances in Regular Action? Once we defer you, you are automagically reconsidered when we reconvene the admissions committees for RA next spring. You are at no advantage nor disadvantage for having been deferred in EA. Nobody, not even me, can accurately gauge your chance of being admitted to MIT. With that said, in the last few years we have admitted between 150-300 students in RA who were initially deferred in EA. Thats a small number, but to be honest, so is the number of RA applicants who are admitted. Its hard to get into MIT. Being deferred means youre going to get another fair shot. Bloggers who were deferred and then admitted (and blogged about it) include Hamsika and Lydia, and I would recommend reading about their experiences. Can I call / email / owl in to find out why I was deferred? No. We wont tell you, because we cant. We make decisions collaboratively, in committees, and no one person has access to the reason (or set of reasons) why anyone was deferred as opposed to admitted or denied. Having done this for some time now, I can tell you it is almost never one thing which, if only it had been otherwise, the decision would be different. I understand this ambiguity can be difficult, but most selective processes are characterized by this kind of complexity. My advice would be to send in the FUN form and then focus on anything other than MIT (other college apps, your classes, your clubs, your navel, whatever) until we release RA decisions. As Lydia commented in the deferred open thread: I actually do agree that the best thing you can do is to focus on things that are not MIT (or other college) admissionsIf I could do things over, I wouldnt think about MIT at all in the months between getting deferred and March.   Do this thing, this thing that Lydia said (hint: this is good life advice generally). Im an RA Applicant, but I read this post anyway; what do I do? You are very sneaky. Just follow the instructions and deadlines  as weve written them. Here are some of the techniques she discusses in her article: The Most Effective Ways to Learn Distributed practice - "This tactic involves spreading out your study sessions, rather than engaging in one marathon," Murphy Paul writes. "Cramming information at the last minute may allow you to get through that test or meeting, but the material will quickly disappear from memory. It’s much more effective to dip into the material at intervals over time. And the longer you want to remember the information, whether it’s two weeks or two years, the longer the intervals should be." Practice testing - Self-testing or taking practice tests over to-be-learned material. "Practice testing could involve practicing recall of target information via the use of actual or virtual flashcards, completing practice problems or questions included at the end of textbook chapters, or completing practice tests included in the electronic supplemental materials that increasingly accompany textbooks." (Source: Improving Students’ Learning With Effective Learning Techniques: Promising Directions From Cognitive and Educational Psychology) Less Effective Ways to Learn Highlighting and underlining - "Some research even indicates that highlighting can get in the way of learning; because it draws attention to individual facts, it may hamper the process of making connections and drawing inferences," Murphy Paul shares. Rereading - While this is a very common approach, it is a passive, rather than active study technique, and does not generally lead to better comprehension or retention. Summarizing - Noting the main points of a text in order to get the gist while leaving out unimportant details - while there may be some benefit to using this approach, distributed practice and practice testing have been shown to be much more effective. Of course each student is unique and therefore the best approach to learning new materials will vary from one student to the next. However research on learning continues to provide insight into best practices. The Olympians are a group of gods who ruled after Zeus led his siblings in the overthrow of the Titans. They lived atop Mount Olympus, for which they are named, and are all related in some way. Many are the children of the Titans, Kronus and Rhea, and most of the rest are children of Zeus. The original 12 Olympic gods include Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Hera, Ares, Athena, Apollo, Aphrodite, Hermes, Artemis, and Hephaestus. Demeter and Dionysus have also been recognized as Olympic gods. The Olympic gods have generally been credited with the first Olympics. The actual historical origins of the ancient Olympic games are a bit murky, but one myth credits their origin to the deity Zeus, who began the festival after his defeat of his father, the Titan god Cronus. Another myth claims that the hero Heracles, after winning a race at Olympia, decreed that the race should be re-enacted every four years. In the article â€Å"Maternal postpartum depressive symptoms and infant externalizing and internal behaviors† a study was conducted using 247 mothers to examine the relationship between the mothers PPD symptoms at 8 weeks and the infant’s externalizing and internalizing behaviors at 12 months. The authors and conductors of this study believe that maternal PPD symptoms influences a 12 month-old infant’s behaviors greatly which can lead to other problems with mental health and social and cognitive issues. Externalizing behaviors can be defined as restlessness, aggressiveness, hyperactivity, and unintentional harm to self or another person (Shenassa et al, 2015, p.121). In the article â€Å"Examining the Screening Practices of Physicians for Postpartum Depression: Implications for Improving Health Outcomes† a study was done to review the different screening practices that are performed by physicians. Screening rates can improve if physicians are fully educated about postpartum depression and trained and accurately trained on the ease of routinely using a tool that validates the presence of PPD (Evans, 2015, p. 704). This is vitally important because more detection can lead to improved access to treatment and a better outcome for the mother and child in the long run. Although the exact number of women who are actually getting screened is unknown, it is safe to say that PPD is often undiagnosed. Too many women are suffering in silence because their family or they themselves are ignoring the symptoms or do not understand what is going on. Although screening tests such as the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and the Postpartum Depression do not solely diagnose PPD, they are aids in the detection of PPD and offers the physician a more in-depth view of the patient’s symptoms (Evans, 2015, p. 705).
